Executive Summary SURVEY METHODOLOGY The tables in this 2011 Top Shops Executive Summary for directive questions are presented with survey answers listed in descending order based on the number of responses. The tables for open-ended ques- tions include the number of responses as well as the median, average, 75th percentile and 25th percentile statistics. The 25th percentile is the value below which 25 percent of answers fall. The 75th percentile is the value below which 75 percent of answers fall. When looking for a mid-point figure, it’s often best to focus on the median rather than the average. Unlike averages/means, the median better serves as the mid- point of the values because it is not distorted by a few unusually high or low values in a given sample. In a few instances, the median is 0, which indicates that more than half of the participants for a particular question responded 0. When this is the case, it’s often better to refer to the aver- age figure. TOP SHOP HONORS PROGRAM The Top Shops benchmarking initiative included an Honors Program to highlight a few of the shops that comprise the top 20-percent benchmarking group. Vetted by a Modern Machine Shop senior editor, these shops represent a quality cross section of U.S. machining businesses relative to location, size and industries served. Congratulations to the following Honors Program winners for 2011.
