Executive Summary Top SHopS SHoP PRofIlES T his year, more than 450 shop principals participated in our third annual Top Shops benchmarking survey. As shown in the table below, their companies serve a diverse range of industries with the highest percentages supplying aerospace, machinery manufacturing, automotive, medical and military customers. Of these: • Approximately 45 percent are job shops (independent shops that primarily perform short-run and other non-repeating work). • Approximately 35 percent are contract shops (independent shops that primarily have contracts for repeating part numbers). 0 10 ALL SHopS oTHer SHopS • Approximately 20 percent are part of a captive operation. In terms of parts produced, there was a fairly large difference between the median and average values reported by all shops. For 2012, the median and average part numbers (SKUs) that shops produced were approximately 500 and 30,000, respectively. Similarly, the median number of total parts produced by shops in 2012 was 35,000 and the average was nearly 1.6 million.
